A first day in Gozo should feel like an introduction, not a race. The island is compact, but its hills, bus connections, village streets and tempting viewpoints can make an overfilled plan tiring. This itinerary gives new visitors three distinct experiences in one manageable day: the harbour at Mġarr, the historic centre of Victoria, and the sheltered bay at Xlendi.
Times are deliberately approximate. Start when your ferry arrives, move the whole plan later if necessary, and skip a stop rather than rushing. If you are already staying in Gozo, simply begin in Victoria.

Around 8:30am: arrive at Mġarr harbour
The ferry approach is one of Gozo’s best introductions. The harbour, colourful boats, Fort Chambray and the church above Għajnsielem reveal several layers of the island before you have even disembarked.
Take ten or fifteen minutes to orient yourself rather than heading away immediately. Look back across the channel towards Comino, note where the return ferry leaves, and confirm your onward bus bay or pickup point.
Travelling by bus: Route 301 currently links the Mġarr ferry area with Victoria. Routes 303 and 323 may also be useful depending on the current network and your exact stop. Check the live planner before boarding.
Around 9:30am: begin in Victoria
Most of Gozo’s bus routes revolve around the central station in Victoria, making the island’s capital the easiest place to understand the network and begin exploring. From the station, walk towards the Citadel through the older streets rather than treating the city only as a transport interchange.
Explore the Citadel
Walk up to the fortified Citadel for broad views across Gozo. A slow circuit of the walls helps you see how close the villages are to one another, while the lanes, cathedral area and museums introduce the island’s long history. You can enjoy the setting without visiting every paid attraction.
Wander through the city streets
Continue towards Independence Square and the streets around St George’s Basilica. Pause for coffee, browse local shops and look up at balconies, niches and carved stone details. This is the part of the morning where an unplanned discovery often becomes more memorable than another item on a checklist.
Around 12:30pm: have an unhurried lunch
Victoria offers the widest choice and keeps the day simple. Choose somewhere that suits your pace, ask about local dishes and allow time to rest. If the weather is very hot, this is also a sensible point to spend longer indoors before travelling to the coast.
Keep the meal moderate if you plan to swim, and carry fresh water for the afternoon.
Around 2:00pm: continue to Xlendi
Return to Victoria bus station and take the short journey towards Xlendi. Route 306 currently runs between Victoria and Xlendi, with route 330 also shown on the corridor. The journey passes through or near Fontana and Munxar, offering a quick impression of how Gozo’s settlements connect.
Choose your own pace at the bay
Keep it gentle
Walk along the waterfront, stop for a drink and enjoy the changing light on the valley and cliffs.
Add a short walk
Follow a recognised path or promenade section, keeping well back from exposed edges and allowing time for the return.
Consider a swim
Only enter the water when conditions suit your ability. Check flags, wind, currents, boat activity and the safest exit point first.
Do not feel obliged to swim. Xlendi is equally rewarding as a place to sit, watch the small boats and see the bay change through the afternoon.

Around 5:30pm: decide how to end the day
If you are staying near Xlendi, remain for an early evening meal. Otherwise, return to Victoria while regular services are still operating and continue to your accommodation from the central station. Visitors based near the harbour can travel back towards Mġarr and Għajnsielem.
Check the final practical connection before settling in for dinner. Do not rely on the time remembered from your outward journey, particularly on Sundays, public holidays or during special events.

Enjoy Mġarr, then concentrate on Victoria. Save Xlendi for another day.
It is extremely hot
Slow the morning, use indoor attractions and postpone exposed walking until later.
The coast is rough or windy
Enjoy the waterfront from land. Never use a sheltered-looking bay as proof that swimming is safe.
You have a hire car
Follow the same route at a relaxed pace, park considerately and avoid adding distant stops simply because you can drive.
Prefer history to the seaside?
From Victoria, route 307 currently serves Xagħra. The village and its surrounding heritage make a strong alternative afternoon, but check attraction opening times and ticket arrangements before travelling. Keep Xlendi for another day rather than squeezing both into a short afternoon.
Why this is a good first day
Mġarr shows Gozo’s relationship with the sea. Victoria introduces its history, daily life and transport hub. Xlendi brings the day to a slower coastal finish. Together they provide enough variety to understand the island without turning your first day into a long transfer between attractions.
Once you have found your bearings, use the rest of your stay for quieter villages, longer walks, beaches, food, cycling and the less obvious places that reward extra time.
