Consular contacts in Malta

How your embassy, high commission or honorary consul may assist while you are visiting Gozo, with locally based contacts and Malta’s official representation registers.

A consul is not an emergency response service. For urgent police, ambulance, fire or rescue assistance anywhere in Gozo or Malta, call 112 first. Contact your consular representative after you are safe.

What consular staff can help with

The precise service depends on your nationality and whether the local representative is a career diplomat or an honorary consul. Telephone before travelling to an office, as appointments and documentary services may be limited.

Lost or stolen passport

They can explain how to obtain an emergency travel document or replacement passport. Report theft to Malta Police first and keep the police report number.

Serious accident, illness or hospitalisation

They may contact relatives with your consent, explain local procedures and provide lists of local doctors or interpreters. They do not normally pay medical bills.

Arrest or detention

They may explain your basic rights, provide details of local lawyers and, where permitted, visit or communicate with you. They cannot secure your release or interfere with Maltese legal proceedings.

Victim of crime

They may help you understand reporting procedures, locate support services and communicate with family or insurers. For danger or a crime in progress, call 112.

Death of a traveller

They can guide relatives through registration, documentation, repatriation or local burial procedures and liaise with relevant authorities.

Major incident or evacuation

During a major crisis they may issue official advice, account for nationals and explain available departure arrangements. Assistance and eligibility differ by country.

What they usually cannot do

They cannot act as a travel agent, replace travel insurance, pay hotels or fines, give special treatment, provide routine banking, or override Maltese police, courts, hospitals or immigration authorities.

Before contacting them

Have your full name, nationality, passport details, location, contact number and a concise account of what happened. Keep police, hospital and insurance reference numbers ready.

Not every country maintains an embassy in Malta. Some are represented by an honorary consul based in Malta. Others are served by an embassy in Rome, another European capital or their home ministry. Use Malta’s official registers for the complete current entry.

Locally based honorary consular contacts

Honorary consuls often provide initial guidance and liaison, but may have limited opening hours and may not issue passports or visas. Confirm the service and arrange an appointment before visiting.
