Village Guide
Village Overview
Xewkija is Gozo’s oldest village, located halfway between the ferry port in Mgarr and Gozo’s capital, Victoria (Rabat). Its name comes from the Maltese word for “thistle,” reflecting its rural origins. The village is renowned for its monumental Rotunda of St John the Baptist, whose dome dominates the local skyline and is among the world’s largest unsupported domes. Xewkija preserves a rich history of skilled stonework and craftsmanship, and maintains a welcoming village spirit within its lively square and streets.
